Early Warning Signs of MS

Early Warning Signs of MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system. MS causes the immune system to attack the nerves, causing problems within the brain and affecting the whole body. The cause of MS is unknown and there is no known cure. Symptoms of multiple sclerosis are sexual dysfunction, incontinence, cognitive problems, changes in emotional health, hearing loss, seizures, trouble swallowing, and breathing problems.
Relapsing remitting MS occurs when new symptoms of MS are experienced, and relapsing MS treatment consists of taking medication. There are some early signs of multiple sclerosis, such as:

1. Pains and spasms
A common symptom of multiple sclerosis is pain and spasms. Over half of the people suffering from MS experience this symptom. Experiencing muscle stiffness, uncontrollable jerking of the legs and back pain is common. Muscle stiffness can range from experiencing a little stiffness to losing the ability to stand or walk. Spasms can be brought on by making sudden movements, temperature changes, and wearing clothing that is too tight.

2. Tingling and numbness
Multiple sclerosis damages nerves in the brain as well as the spinal cord. The signals sent throughout the body are either conflicting or no signals are sent at all once the nerves are damaged causing numbness. These sensations are among one of the earliest and most common signs of MS. Body parts affected most by this symptom are the fingers, arms, legs, and face.

3. Bladder issues
Bladder problems are experienced by more than half of patients with MS. This symptom can include the urge to urinate, frequent urination, and incontinence. This can leave patients feeling embarrassed and as if they have lost control of their life. There are treatment options such as incontinent pads, pelvic floor therapy, and medication.

4. Weakness or fatigue
Most patients with MS are affected by this symptom early on. When the spinal cord nerves are damaged by this illness it causes fatigue that lasts for weeks. The feeling of weakness usually begins in the legs and spreads throughout the body. This lack of energy usually gets worse throughout the day, and doesn’t improve with sleep. Heat and humidity can make it even worse.

5. Vision problems
This is one of the main symptoms of MS. The optic nerve is affected and causes trouble with eyesight. Blurred and double vision as well as loss of eyesight are possible symptoms.

6. Balance problems or dizziness
It is common for patients suffering from MS to experience lightheadedness. Usually when standing up they may begin to feel lightheaded. This symptom is experienced because of the damage that MS has done to the brain. If the person is experiencing severe symptoms their doctor may refer them to a physical therapist who can teach them movements to help them when they feel dizzy. Medication can also be prescribed.
