Dietary Tips for Renal Cancer

Dietary Tips for Renal Cancer

Renal cancer or any kidney disease can be extremely painful and alarming. Apart from proper medications, you need to be careful about your dietary routine to stay healthy and pain-free. A healthy and balanced diet comprising plenty of fruits and vegetables is integral for your health. However, this kind of cancer also imposes some restrictions on what you can eat. So, it is important to learn about the foods to avoid renal cancer.

  • Canned foods and beverages
Salts disrupt the fluid balance in your body, which results in high blood pressure. This further leads to an aggravation of the symptoms seen in renal cancer. Foods that are typically high in salt include fast and canned foods, salty snacks, and deli meats. Chips, fried items, and colas are, therefore, always on top of the list of foods to avoid with renal cancer. Even while cooking meals at home, try to avoid using excess salt.
  • Avocados
As much as they are known to provide nutrition with their heart-healthy fats and antioxidants, they are among the foods to avoid with renal cancer. This is because avocados are high in potassium, and if you suffer from a kidney problem, the intake of potassium is restricted. One cup or 150 grams of avocado provides 727 mg of potassium, which is double of what a medium-sized banana provides.
  • Whole wheat bread
If you are suffering from renal cancer, it is best to go for white bread instead of the whole-wheat bread. Whole-wheat bread contains a significant amount of potassium and phosphorus. Phosphorus increases in the bloodstream when suffering from any kidney disease and leads to symptoms like itching and joint pain. So, instead of whole wheat breads, you should choose white breads with low sodium content.
  • Oranges and orange juice
Although known for their vitamin C content and nutritional value, both oranges and even homemade orange juices are among the foods to avoid when suffering from renal cancer. This is again because of their high potassium content. You can, however, substitute oranges with apples, grapes, and cranberries as they are a good source of nutrition.
  • Processed meats
Processed meats, such as bacon, pepperoni, and sausage, are unhealthy and even more so when suffering from renal cancer. Although they are high in proteins, they also contain sodium, which is detrimental to the health of a person affected by this condition.
  • Too much water
Water intake should be restricted in renal cancer. Since the kidney functions are compromised in this health condition, excess hydration can lead to an unnecessary retention of the water in your body.

So, take note of these foods to avoid renal cancer and stay updated with your healthcare provider to manage the disease effectively.
